TOPSY TURVY HEARTS

I needed to make a baby quilt for a friend.  This is her first baby and the baby is a girl.  I challenged myself to not buy any fabric but to look into my stash.  That was a really hard because I always see fabric that I would like to buy.  Unfortunately, I’m running out of room.  I’ll show you the steps it took to make the quilt.

All the yardages for the fabric were 42” wide.
¾ yd. medium pink                             ¼ yd. blue
½ yd. pale pink                                   ¼ yd. dark pink
3/8 yd. green and white stripe              ¼ yd. medium green
¼ yd white                                         1 3/8 yds. fabric for backing
¼ yd. yellow                                         3/8 yd fabric for binding
                                                            38” x 38” batting
From the white fabric:
cut 64 squares, 1 ¼” by 1 ¼”
cut 16 rectangles, 1 ¼” by 5”
From the medium pink fabric:
cut 16 rectangles 2 ¾” by 4 ¼”
cut for outer border 2 strips 3 ½” by 28”
cut for outer border 2 strips 3 ½” by 34”
From the yellow fabric:
cut 8 rectangles 2 ¾” by 4 ¼”
From the blue fabric:
cut 8 rectangles 2 ¾ by 4 ¼”
From the green and white stripe
cut 32 squares 2 ¾” by 2 ¾”
From the medium green:
      cut 16 squares 2 ¾” by 2 ¾”
From the light green:
     cut 4 squares 5” by 5”
From the pale pink:
cut 3 squares 7 ¾” by 7 ¾”; cut twice diagonally to make 12 triangles
    cut 5 squares 5” by 5”
cut 2 squares 4 ¼” by 4 ¼” cut once diagonally to make 4 triangles
From the dark pink:
     cut 2 strips 1 ½” by 26”
     cut 2 strips 1 ½” by 28

Now the fun begins.  Using a pencil and your ruler, take the white squares and draw a line on the wrong side of the fabric from one corner to another.  You’re going to place each square on 2 corners of the pink, yellow, and blue rectangles so that the diagonal lines run from the upper middle to the our side edges of the rectangle.  Sew on the marked line.  You’ll be making 32 units.

Take your ruler and your rotary cutter and you will align the ruler ¼” from the seam line and trim away the excess fabric.  Flip open the white triangles and press toward the triangle.  Now that the units are made you will take your ruler and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the green and white stripe squares.  You’ll place each square on the units you just made.  Be careful how you place the green and white stripe square because you will cut the excess off to make the one-half heart segment.  Sew on the marked lines.  You will have a total of 16 pink units, 8 yellow units, and 8 blue units.

Take your ruler and your rotary cutter and you will align the ruler ¼” from the seam line and trim away the excess fabric.  Flip open the remaining green and white striped triangles and press toward the triangles.  Sew the units together to make 16 hearts.  Sew the white rectangles to the tops of the heart units.  You will make 16 blocks.

To make the other blocks for this quilt, you will need to draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the medium green square from corner to corner.  Place the marked squares on two opposite corners of the light green square, right sides together.  Sew on the marked line.  Take your ruler and your rotary cutter and you will align the ruler ¼” from the seam line and trim away the excess fabric.  Flip open the triangles and press toward the medium green.  Place the marked squares on the other two corners and repeat the process.

Arrange your heart blocks and the square within a square blocks, the setting squares and the setting triangles in diagonal rows.  Pay close attention when you are placing the heart blocks so they are in the correct position.  Sew the blocks together and press the seams toward the heart blocks.  Sew the rows together, pressing the seams all in one direction.

Add the inner border and outer border.  Press toward the border.  Take your batting and batting and either spray glue or baste your quilt and quilt.  Trim the batting and backing so the edges are even with the quilt top and bind the quilt.  ENJOY!!!!!!
